Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | By Graeme Allison

Mustangs shut out Lions for third consecutive win

TORONTO – Katelyn Gosling and Marlowe Pecora provided the offence, while Kelly Campbell stopped all 22 shots she faced as the Western Mustangs women's hockey team shut out the York Lions 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Canlan Ice Sports.

The win gives Western sole possession of second place in the standings, leaving them with 32 points through 15 games, five points behind the Guelph Gryhpons for top of the table. The shutout was Campbell's third of the season and came in her first game back after the winter break.

Both Gosling's and Pecora's goals came in the second period and proved to be the only markers of the game. Gosling's goal came on the power play 53 seconds into the frame, and the unassisted tally was her second goal on the season, with both coming on the power play. Pecora's goal, also her second of the 2015-16 campaign, came almost exactly 11 minutes later, with assists coming from Gosling and Brittany Clapham

The Western penalty kill went a perfect three for three to preserve the lead, including a cross checking penalty mid-way through the third period. This improves upon their eighth ranked penalty kill percentage of 88.6 percent.

The win extends the Mustangs current winning streak three games, and they will look to continue their winning ways going this weekend as Laurentian and Nipissing visit the Thompson Arena on Friday and Saturday night respectively. Both games can be watched live on OUA.tv
