MBB Stats vs. Waterloo and Laurier - Jan. 27 and 30, 2016

Men's Basketball By Liana Timbol

Preview: Mustangs prepare to take on Waterloo and Laurier

After splitting last week's games, the Mustangs prepare to take on the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night before heading back to Alumni Hall to face the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

The purple and white record sits at 4-7, keeping them in third place of the OUA West. Their most recent victory came against the CIS No. 3 Brock Badgers with a 72-61 score.

Greg Morrow continues to lead the pack in his final season, topping the OUA with an average of 23.8 points per game. Despite taking a loss to the Marauders, Morrow came out with a season high 34 points to dominate the floor. Peter Scholtes follows Morrow with 13.5 PPG after scoring 16 points in their latest contest, 11 of which were recorded throughout a five minute period in the third quarter. Anthony Spiridis rounds out the trio of players pulling double digits, contributing an average of 11.9 points per game.

Morrow also leads the team in defence with 7.6 rebounds per game, with Tom Filgiano following with 6.1 off the glass and 1.5 steals per game. With only a month left of regular season games for the Mustangs, they're looking to move up the rankings and into a prime playoff position.

Western at Waterloo - Wednesday, January 27 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv

Waterloo and Western first met in both teams' season opener, where the Mustangs bested the Warriors by 21 points. Now, with half the season behind them, Waterloo sits right behind the Mustangs in fourth place in the OUA West with a record of 1-10.

Fourth-year guard Jon Ravenhorst leads the team with 17.8 PPG, followed close behind by veteran guard Ben Davis who averages 16.0 points per game. Mike Pereira and rookie Dylan Philips round out the scoreboard with 11.4 and 11.2 points per game.

Pereira leads the Warrior defence and the OUA with 11.9 rebounds per game. He's followed by Muhammad Arwar, who contributes an average 6.1 RPG.

The Warriors have been narrowly edged out in their last few games, losing by a mere three points in their contest against Nipissing and by only seven points to Laurentian. The Warriors will have to capitalize on their defence to keep themselves in a close contest against the Mustangs.

Western vs. Laurier - Saturday, January 30 at 3:00 p.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv

Saturday's contest will mark the second time the Mustangs and Golden Hawks will meet, after Laurier narrowly defeated the Mustangs with a score of 76-61 back in early November. The Golden Hawks sit in first place of the OUA West with a record of 6-5.

Veteran Golden Hawk Will Coulthard can be expected to be the biggest challenge for the purple and white defence as he leads Laurier with 20.1 PPG. The 6-2 guard and Laurier's most recent Male Athlete of the Week has contributed double digit points in every game this season, with a season-high 32 points paving the way for a victory over Nipissing.

Also likely to appear on the scoreboard are forwards Luke Allin and Matt Chesson who average 13.3 and 12.3 points per game.

Allin leads the defence by a narrow margin with 5.9 rebounds per game, while teammate Simon Mikre follows with 5.8 of his own.

With a little over a third of the players connecting on over 40% of their field goals, the Golden Hawks must keep their shooting success high to top the Mustangs in Saturday's contest.
