TORONTO – Meagan O'Brien scored a pair of goals and Valencia Yordanov made 16 saves as the Toronto Varsity Blues downed Western 2-1 at Varsity Arena.
Amanda Pereira scored the only goal of the game for the Mustangs, who have now lost three games in a row for the first time this season. Western sits in fourth in the OUA while Toronto moves to within one point of the Mustangs in fifth place.
Kelly Campbell got the start in net and was under fire early, as the Varsity Blues fired 13 shots her way in the opening frame. O'Brien got the scoring started just under three minutes into the first, taking a feed from Lauren Straatman to record her second goal of the season.
Five minutes later Pereira tied up the score on a feed from
Tia Kipfer. Western may not have gotten a power play goal in the first frame but they benefitted from a tired Toronto squad that took two penalties within the first ten minutes.
The second period and third periods were much more evenly matched. Toronto managed six shots in each frame while Western were one behind each time. But O'Brien had the only goal, picking up the puck from linemate Cristine Chao and burying the winner late in the second.
Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill Friday. It has now been five games since Western allowed a power play goal, moving their penalty kill rate to an excellent 90%. Toronto has also been solid on the penalty kill, and with a 92.8% success rate they sit tops in the OUA.
Next up for the Mustangs is a meeting with Ryerson on Saturday afternoon. The Rams are currently last in the OUA with a 2-0-14-1 record and enter on a four-game losing streak after falling to Windsor on Friday night.
