Western set for home opener against Waterloo

After splitting its first two games of the season on the road, Western looks to climb above .500 by claiming its first home victory this Friday against Waterloo.

Despite putting 10 more shots on net than Guelph, Gryphons netminder Scott Stajcer turned aside all but two shots to help his team claim a 3-2 win over the purple and white. Western didn't wait long before bouncing back however, defeating Brock by a 4-3 score on Saturday afternoon.

Through two games this season the Mustangs have spread the offence around, with six different players finding the back of the net and seven players contributing assists. Greg Dodds has gotten the start in net for both games so far, making 25 saves against Guelph and 29 against the Badgers, giving him 3.03 goals-against-average through two games.

After two tight games to open the season, the Mustangs should be in for another test when they face Waterloo on Friday. Waterloo finished in third place in the West Division last season, just three points behind Western.

Although the Mustangs finished ahead of the Warriors in the standings, Waterloo took the season series against Western last season, winning both games and outscoring the purple and white 11-7. The Mustangs will be looking to reverse that trend on Friday, although the Warriors will enter aiming to rebound after their 5-0 season opening loss to the Gryphons last week.

The Warriors will have a different look when they come to London as the lineup has gone through major changes since last year, losing leading scorer Colin Behenna as well as key defenceman Joe Underwood, although goaltender Mike Morrison returns in net.

Game time on Friday night is set for 7 p.m. at Thompson Arena, and fans can tune in live on OUA.tv and CHRW Radio 94.9 FM.
