Western heads north to take on Nipissing and Laurentian

After starting their season off on a high-note with two early wins, Western looks to improve to a 4-0 record this weekend when they head on the road to take on Nipissing and Laurentian.

The Mustangs found themselves playing from behind in their first regular season game against the Gryphons, as Guelph converted on an early power play to take a 1-0 advantage in the first period. However, Western rallied to tie the game later in the period with a goal from rookie Shana Alexander.

Western kept the momentum rolling into the second period where third-year Amanda Pereira gave the purple and white their first lead of the game. A goal by Guelph later in the second and a scoreless third period eventually forced the Mustangs into overtime, until a Marlo Pecora goal two minutes into overtime sealed the 3-2 victory for the Mustangs.

Western's game against the Windsor Lancers last Thursday proved to be less testing for the Mustangs, as the purple and white cruised to a 6-2 victory on the road.

The Mustangs have had a successful start to their season, averaging 4.5 goals per game and notching 14 assists to match. Goalie Katie Jacobs has logged all of Western's minutes in net this season, posting a 1.97 goals against average and a .897 save percentage.

After a strong start to their season, the Mustangs should be in for a challenge when they face Nipissing this Saturday.

This game will no doubt be one fueled by revenge for the Lakers, as they fell 1-0 to the Mustangs in triple overtime in game three of the OUA Semi-Finals just last year. As strong as both teams were last season, the Mustangs and Lakers have a strong returning class once again, and should be strong forces in the conference.

The Lakers have matched the Mustangs' early success, also starting their season undefeated through their first two games, while averaging four goals per game. Alexane Papineau leads the Lakers in points so far this season, registering one goal and three assists, while Bronwyn Bolduc leads the team with two goals.

Less than 24 hours after taking on Nipissing the Mustangs will face off with the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday afternoon in Sudbury.

Laurentian's played only one game so far this season, falling to the Guelph Gryphons 5-0 this past Saturday. Despite being shut out in their lone game so far, the Voyageurs return two of their top three scorers from last season with both Ellery Veerman and Taylor Weber in the lineup once again this year.

Although the two teams split the season series last year, the Voyageurs will be looking to repeat the success they had in the last meeting between the two teams, as they defeated the Mustangs 4-3 at Thompson Arena on January 22.
