Mustangs close out regular season with 3-1 loss to CIS no. 1 York Lions

TORONTO – The Mustangs closed out the regular season in fifth place on Sunday afternoon, following a 3-1 loss to the CIS no. 1 York Lions.

Lucas Ventura was the only Mustang to record a goal, finding the back of the net at the 49 minute mark.

The loss puts the Mustangs fifth in the OUA West Division, with a record of 5-6-5. York's 14-0-2 record allows them to end the regular season in first place.

The Lions jumped out in front early on, with Steve Kloutsouniotis connecting with the mesh off a pass from Eddie Lay. Kloutsouniotis's goal was the only one in the first half to send Western back to the bench with a one goal deficit.

Returning for the second half, it was Western who would strike first. Ventura sent the ball past York's Daniel Gosciniak four minutes in, marking only the fourth goal allowed by the Mississauga native all season long.

Thirty minutes later, Jo Lepara responded with his first of two goals.

The Sociology student landed the game-winning goal with 27 minutes remaining in the match, but that proved not to be enough. Lepara landed his second goal of the day and of his CIS career after picking up a pass from Francesco Sinopoli.

The Mustangs are back in action on Wednesday, October 26 for OUA playoff action. Western will head to Waterloo to take on the fourth place Laurier Golden Hawks.
