SUDBURY, Ont. - The Mustangs wrapped up their trip to Northern Ontario on Sunday afternoon with a loss, falling to the Laurentian Voyageurs by a score of 4-2 at the Countryside Arena.
Western ends their three-game series on the road having won against Windsor on October 13 and dropping both games this weekend to Nipissing and Laurentian.
The purple and white started the game strong, scoring on a power play midway through the first period after going scoreless in their previous game. The goal was the second of the season for rookie forward
Alyssa Chiarello.
Lyndsay Kirkham registered an assist, moving her to third in the OUA in total points.
Meanwhile,
Katie Jacobs fended off all 12 shots sent her way in the first frame to keep the one-goal advantage held by the Mustangs intact as the game moved into the second period.
Laurentian rebounded in the second, tying the game early on a goal by Morgan McCann. Despite being outshot 15 to eight and recording two penalties, Western held the score even at 1-1.
It wasn't until the third period that the Voyageurs were able to take control of the game, building a 3-1 lead after two goals within the first five minutes. The first was an unassisted goal scored by Ellery Veerman, and the second was scored by Taylor Webster on a power play.
The Mustangs cut the point deficit to one with a goal by
Megan Taylor, with
Brianna Iazzolino recording her second assist of the afternoon. However, the goal was not enough to tip momentum in favour of the Mustangs, as Emma Leger scored with less than a minute remaining to put the game out of reach and secure the win for the Voyageurs.
Western will return to Thompson Arena next week for the first time since their home opener, welcoming the Laurier Golden Hawks on October 29 at 4 p.m.
