Mustangs head into playoffs in second place following loss to York

TORONTO – The Mustangs closed out their regular season with a loss on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the Lions at York's Alumni Field.

With their first loss of the year, the Mustangs hold a 9-1-6 record. The Lions' win will keep them in first place in the OUA West with a regular season record of 11-2-3.

After earning a draw this past Thursday to secure a top two standing in the OUA West, the Mustangs were unable to rise further in the standings with the loss to the first-place Lions. Despite the loss, Stef Di Tella continued to be a bright-spot for the team, as she managed to create some of Western's best scoring chances.

Only allowing three shots on goal, the Mustangs' defense remained a strong point for them during the match, a trend which they hope to carry with them into the playoffs.

The game looked promising early for Western, as midfielder Grace Grafham and defender Jenna White both had quality scoring opportunities off corner kicks from Di Tella. But as strong as the Mustang offence has been this season, York goalie Taylor Grant kept her team in the game until the Lions were able to find a flaw in the purple and white net coverage.

Nour Ghoneim would be the one to score the game winning goal, striking midway through the second half to earn the victory.

By securing second in the OUA West division, the Mustangs have earned themselves a bye through the first round of the playoffs and will not be back in action until the second round of the postseason, where they will face the winner of the Windsor-McMaster matchup.
