Greg Dodds vs Guelph - 2015

Men's Hockey By Myles Dichter

Mustangs set to take on Guelph and York this weekend

After splitting a pair of games last week, Western is back at it this weekend with a home date Friday against Guelph followed by a visit to York the next night.

The Mustangs started off last weekend on a high note, with a 2-1 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks. Goaltender Greg Dodds was a wall in net, making X saves. Connor Chartier potted the winner, capping off a wild four-minute span in the third period that featured all three of the game's goals.

Unfortunately, the same performance could not be repeated the next night as the purple and white allowed 43 shots on net in a 4-1 loss.

Western now stands at 3-2 on the season, which places them in the middle of the pack in the West Division. Dodds has been a key to the Mustangs success so far this season, posting a 2.29 goals against average and a .935 save percentage, good for fifth in the OUA in both categories. Chartier and Jonathan Laser led Western in scoring through the first five games, with each tallying one goal and three assists.

Western will be looking to exact its revenge from a season opening loss against Guelph. In that game, Western outshot their opponents 36-25 but ended up on the wrong side of a one goal game.

One key for the Mustangs will be to avoid penalties, something which has plagued them through their first five games, with Western recording the fifth most penalty minutes in the league.

The Gryphons offence is led by the duo of Robert Lepine and Cody Thompson with six points through six games. Lepine leads the team with four goals on the season, while Thompson has proved to be Guelph's biggest threat with the man advantage, with both of his goals this year coming on the power play.

This game will mark Western's first test against York this season. Last year, the two teams played each other tightly as they split the season series with each team winning a one goal game.

The Mustangs will need to be on the lookout for forward Trevor Petersen and defenseman Derek Sheppard who are tied for third in the OUA with nine points each. Western will also be up against one of the top goaltenders in the league so far this year in rookie Mack Shields. The netminder has started in five or York's six games, posting a 4-1 record along with a 1.75 GAA and .933 save percentage.
