Western looks to bounce back against Laurier and Waterloo

After falling to Nipissing and Laurentian University this past weekend on the road, the Mustangs will hope to leave those losses behind them as they host Laurier and Waterloo at home this week.

The loss to the Nipissing Lakers, who now hold a 4-0 record, was a learning experience for the Mustangs early in the season. Tareya Webster received the first start of her CIS career against Nipissing, stopping 24 of the 26 shots sent her way in the loss.

In their following game against Laurentian, the Mustangs revitalized their offence with an early power play goal from Alyssa Chiarello and a goal from Megan Taylor in the third. However, the Voyageurs managed to outscore the Mustangs for the 4-2 victory.

The Mustangs are now 2-2 on the season and are tied for eighth in the OUA. Lyndsay Kirkham leads the team in points with five so far on the year.

The Golden Hawks will come into the matchup this Saturday with a record of 0-3. The rivalry between Laurier and Western has been one of the best in the OUA in recent years, and the two teams split the season series last year.

Western will need to keep up their impressive offensive season as they will be facing Laurier goalie Lauren Webber, who, despite the team's struggles, has been a consistent pillar for the team with a .924 save percentage.

Waterloo, who has been on a tear as of late, will be looking to build on their three-game winning streak as they head into the weekend. The team's most recent victory came this past weekend when they got the better of Queens in a 6-0 win.

Although the Warriors are off to a good start in 2016, the Mustangs will be looking to halt their momentum and repeat the success that the purple and white had against Waterloo last season, with Western sweeping the regular season series

The Mustangs will need a strong performance at both ends of the rink, as the Warriors boast the third highest scoring offence in the league with 2.75 goals per game, while also allowing the second fewest goals against with a 0.99 goals against average.
