Box Score KINGSTON, Ont. – Spencer Abraham scored the shootout winner as a Western comeback attempt fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Queen's on Saturday night in Kingston.
Despite ending up on the losing end, the Mustangs outshot their opponents and controlled much of the play, except for an unfortunate three-minute stretch in the second period when the Gaels scored all their goals.
A cross-checking major to Queen's Cory Genovese gave the Mustangs an early opportunity, as on the ensuing powerplay
Rob Polesello got around a Gaels defender with a toe drag before walking in alone and firing one past the goalie.
The Gaels evened the score at the five-minute mark of the second period. After
Luke Peresinni made a few key saves to maintain the Western lead, Queen's captain Patrick Downe managed to beat him through the five hole on a wrist shot from the point.
Downe's goal seemed to opened the floodgates for the home team, as they scored two more quickly in succession at the end of the period.
First, Darcy Greenaway scored. Then just 33 seconds later, Harrison Hendrix burst into the zone on an odd man rush and slid the puck under Peresinni's pad to extend the Gaels lead to 3-1.
The Mustangs climbed back into the game early in the final frame on the back of Ray Heuther. Heuther made a pretty inside out move to get past two Gaels, then went to his backhand to roof the puck for his first goal of the season.
With a little less than six minutes remaining, the comeback was completed when defenceman
Rylan Bechtel also recorded his first goal of the campaign to tie things at three goals apiece.
Overtime proved to solve nothing, and Abraham scored the lone goal of the shootout to give Queen's the 4-3 win.
Western will be back in action on Thursday night, when they head to Toronto to take on the Ryerson Rams. Game time is set for 7:30, and will be shown live on OUA.tv
