LONDON, Ont. – A goal from Annie Berg 37 seconds into overtime lifted the Brock Badgers to a 2-1 win over the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena.
The point earned by virtue of the overtime loss bumped the purple and white into a three-way tie for seventh place in the OUA standings, but extended their losing streak to three games overall and two games at home.
The afternoon got off to a good start for the Mustangs. After being outshot by Guelph the game before, they were able to flip the script in the first period of this game and outshoot the Badgers 13-3.
"We definitely want to put as many shots on the net as possible," Mustangs head coach
Kelly Paton shared about her discussion with the team after yesterday's game. "More shots you get, the better chance you have of scoring."
The shot advantage eventually resulted in a lead for the Mustangs when forward
Evra Levesque scored her first goal of the season, carrying the puck on a two on one opportunity and burying a wide angle shot over the shoulder of goalkeeper Jensen Murphy.
"It feels like losing about ten pounds on your shoulders," Levesque said about tallying her first goal of the season after ten games, "it feels good when your teammates can help you get that pressure off and keep the game going."
Western's offence slowed some in the second period as they only managed to fire five pucks on net but they continued to play solid defence and stayed disciplined, committing no penalties in the period. As a consequence, it was a relatively quiet 20 minutes for Mustangs goalkeeper
Tareya Webster, who got the start for the first time since her road start against Nipissing earlier in the season.
The Mustangs continued to slow down in the third period, failing to register a shot on goal until the midway point in the period had already passed. Just under seven minutes into the period, Brock forward Maggie Spratt-Mallick picked up the puck in front of the net after a rebound and put away her first goal of the season. Her goal proved to be the last one of the period, sending the game to overtime with both teams tied at 1-1.
It didn't take long to decide a winner in the extra period. Berg, who registered three assists in her team's last game, was the hero for the Badgers, scoring the game-winning goal 37 seconds into overtime after collecting her own faceoff win and beating Webster with a backhand shot.
"A little bit of adversity," Patton responded when asked what her team has learned to cope with in this tough stretch of games, "Discipline is something we discussed as well in terms of managing our penalties." Western committed only three penalties in the game, one of their lowest totals all season, and once again kept their opponent scoreless on the power play.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, November 19 at 3:30 p.m., as they head on the road to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv
