Western falls to Ryerson on the road

TORONTO – A pair of goals from Jamie Lewis powered the Ryerson Rams to a 5-2 win over the Western Mustangs on Thursday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The loss extends the Mustangs losing streak to six games and moves the team to 4-6-2 on the season, while Ryerson extends their lead atop the OUA West Division with a 9-2-1 record.

Lewis' two goals, his sixth and seventh of the season, came a little less than three minutes apart in the third and broke a 2-2 deadlock to give the Rams their ninth win of the year. Three other Ryerson players marked their names on the scoresheet with Chris Marchese, Devon Pallani, and Michael Fine providing the Rams other three goals.

Connor Chartier and Trent Ouellette provided the offence for the purple and white, with both players recording their third goals of the season. Both Rob Polesello and Ray Huether also registered points on Thursday, providing the assists on Ouellette's marker.

Luke Peresinni got the start for the Mustangs and put in a strong performance, turning aside 35 of 40 shots in the loss. Taylor Dupuis got the win for Ryerson, making 35 saves.

The Rams were first on the board on Thursday, with Marchese scoring six minutes into the period on a breakaway.

Western responded midway through the frame, with Ouellette putting home a rebound off of a point shot from Heuther to tie things up at 1-1. The game wouldn't stay tied for long, however, as Devon Paliani notched his first career OUA goal to put Ryerson up 2-1 at the end of the first period.

The Mustangs responded early in the second, with Chartier picking off a pass in the Ryerson zone before going low on the short side to tie the game just over three minutes into the second.

Lewis netted the game winner a little less than 10 minutes later, scoring on the power play on a shot from the top of the circle to put the Rams in front for the remainder of the game, with the home side adding another two goals in the third to secure the 5-2 win.

Western will be back in action on Friday night, when the Mustangs return home to Thompson Arena to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv
