Mustangs end first half of season with loss to Lancers

LONDON, Ont. – After allowing only one goal in a double overtime victory over the Warriors the day prior, the Western Mustangs women's ice hockey team's defence didn't fare as well on Sunday afternoon against the Windsor Lancers, conceding eight goals in an 8-1 defeat at Thompson Arena.

Riding a three-game winning streak heading into today's game, the purple and white will end the first half of the season with a 7-7 record, good for fifth place in the OUA standings.

The Mustangs appeared to be on the right track to open the game, outshooting their opponents 5-1 early on, including four shots on the power play.

The Lancers quickly turned that around, however, as they ended the period with a 16-8 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The two goals came within two minutes of each other late in the period.
Western continued to struggle in the second period as the Lancers kept outshooting them and added three goals to their lead, capped by veteran forward Erinn Noseworthy's second goal of the game and sixth in six games.

The first goal of the frame came while Windsor was on the power play, snapping a five-game streak in which the Mustangs hadn't allowed a power play goal.

Western eventually get on the board when Megan Taylor found the back of the net on the power play for her second goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Katie Jacobs, getting the start after earning the victory over the Warriors on Saturday, allowed three goals on 20 shots before being replaced by rookie Tareya Webster in the second frame.

Windsor's offence didn't stop producing goals in the third period, adding two more in the last seven minutes to solidify the victory.

Molly Jenkins earned the victory in net for the Lancers, allowing only one goal on 25 shots after allowing six goals in their season opener against the Mustangs.

Western heads into the break hoping to learn from this game and continue to build on their successes from the first half.

"There's definitely some games we can learn from," head coach Kelly Paton said about her team's first half of the season. "Any mistake that we make we can try to learn from it so moving forward we'll hope to move in the three-point direction."

The Mustangs will open the second half of the season on Saturday, January 7 at 4 p.m. when they welcome the Ryerson Rams to the Thompson Arena.
