Mustangs take to the road to close out 2016

After getting back in the win column this past weekend, Western looks to build on its momentum in consecutive games Wednesday and Thursday at Laurier and Waterloo.

The Mustangs snapped their seven-game losing streak last Friday in a school day game against Laurentian. Despite a resilient Voyageurs that erased the Mustangs early 3-0 lead, Western held tough and rebounded with three more goals to secure the victory.

The following day, the purple and white lost a tough one against Nipissing. Despite outshooting their opponents 45-23, Western struggled to score and lost 3-1.

Heading into their final regular season games before the winter break, Connor Chartier and Luke Karaim are now tied for the team lead with nine points. They have each scored five goals and assisted on another four. Meanwhile, Jonathan Laser continues to impress, as the blueliner has notched six assists as well as two goals.

Sitting in sixth in the OUA West Division, the Golden Hawks are two spots and four points ahead of Western. The Mustangs dropped them 2-1 in the lone meeting between the teams this season.

The Golden Hawks have been involved in some close games recently with four straight one-goal games. They dropped two 4-3 decision to Lakehead over the weekend.

Wingers Andrew Fritsch and Derek Schoenmakers represent Laurier's most potent offensive threats. They each have 15 points. Schoenmakers is ninth in the OUA in goals with nine.

Western was also able to topple Waterloo earlier in the season by a final score of 3-1, but now the Warriors are breathing down the Mustangs' necks. They are in ninth place in the division and just one point behind Western.

The Warriors just snapped a lengthy losing streak of their own with 6-1 victory at Brock. Stephen Silas scored twice in that game, and is now tied with two others for the team lead in goals with four.

Waterloo has not mustered much offence this season as they rank second to last in the OUA in goals, assists, and shots.

If the Mustangs' offensive surge over the weekend continues, they should be able to outscore Waterloo on the way to victory.
