Western falls to Ryerson on Wednesday night

TORONTO - A 36-point performance by Adika Peter-McNeilly propelled the Ryerson Rams to a 105-76 victory against the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

This marks the Mustangs third consecutive loss as their record updates to 1-6, keeping them in a three-way tie for third place with Waterloo and Algoma in the West. Ryerson keeps their undefeated record in tact with the win, improving to 6-0 and maintaining their spot on top of the OUA East Division standings.

Omar Shiddo led purple and white in scoring with 15 points, while three others, Alex Coote, Dominic Clayton and Alex Otzyv recorded 11 points apiece. Otzyv led the way on the boards. recording six rebounds and adding two steals, while Nikola Farkic recorded five defensive rebounds and three assists.

Peter-McNeilly connected on 81.2% of his shots from the field, including setting a Ryerson record with 10 three pointers in the game. He also took the lead on the other side of the court recording a team-high seven rebounds and six assists. Ammanuel Diressa followed in scoring with 21 points, while Myles Charvis contributed heavily offensively with 10 assists.

The Rams came out with full force in the first frame, sinking seven shots from beyond the arc and creating an early distance from their opponents en route to a 27-15 lead after the first 10 minutes.  

After opening the second frame with a dunk by Peter-McNeilly, the Rams went on an 18-9 run, with all 18 points coming from three pointers. Peter-McNeilly and Diressa contributed 19 of the Rams 33 points in the second frame, as they went into halftime with a 60-36 lead.

Following a pair of high-scoring quarters to start the game, both teams came out strong on defence in the second half. The two teams traded points throughout the third, with the Mustangs trailing 77-52 going into the final ten minutes.

Ryerson continued to find success from three point range in the final quarter, going on a 20-5 run to start the frame with 18 of those points coming off of three pointers. Western outscored the Rams 17-8 over the final five minutes of the game, with Clayton leading the way with a trio of three pointers of his own, but it wasn't enough to close the gap as the Rams walked away with a 105-76 win.  

The Mustangs will close out 2016 portion of their schedule against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon at the Goldring Centre. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. and fans can tune in live on OUA.tv and CHRW Radio 94.9 FM.
