Mustangs look to move up in OUA standings with weekend matchups

After splitting their two games over the weekend between Ryerson and Toronto, the Mustangs will look to earn two more wins against Guelph and Brock this Saturday and Sunday.

With their 6-3 win over the Rams this past Saturday, the Mustangs dropped Ryerson to 2-5 on the year and moved their own record to 3-1-3.

Fourth-year Lyndsay Kirkham, who had four goals and two assists coming into the game, had an incredible game as she scored a hat trick and added another assist to her total. Ryerson's Alex Rodriguez scored late in the third to make it a one goal game, but a goal from second-year April Clark would ultimately put the game out of reach.

The following day would be a different story for the Mustangs, as the team was unable to score on any of their 29 shots on goal. Western goaltender Katie Jacobs was stellar for the purple and white, stopping 43 shots on net. However, the Toronto offence would eventually break through and score two goals early in the second period to give the Varsity Blues the eventual 2-0 victory.

The Guelph Gryphons will come into their Saturday afternoon matchup on fire with a 6-2 record while riding a four-game win streak. Although the Gryphons are coming in with some momentum, the Mustangs will be looking to repeat the success of their season opener when they handed Guelph a 3-2 loss.

Despite the early victory for Western, the Gryphons have been on a scoring tear as of late and are averaging four goals per game during their recent winning streak. Sydney Davison will be looking to continue her dominant goal-scoring this weekend with six goals on the year so far.

Not far behind her is Kelly Gribbons with five. Gribbons has found success against the Mustangs so far this season, as she scored her first goal of the season against Western in their meeting last month.

The Mustangs will be back at home on Sunday  to take on the Badgers for the first time this year. Both teams currently hold the same record at 3-1-3 and will look to create separation in the conference standings with a win this Sunday.

Cara Sayles has shown to be a force this year for Brock, leading the team with 12 points and five goals in eight games. Christina Ieradi has also been effective this year with five goals and four assists this year.

The team has been an average team offensively so far, but they have found success on the defensive end this season. The Badgers rank second in the OUA in power-play goals against, third in penalty-kill percentage, and have the best save percentage in the CIS at .949. In order to win, Western will have to take advantage of every chance they get.
