TORONTO - After a tough loss to Queen's last night, the Mustangs bounced back in impressive fashion on Saturday, defeating the York Lions 93-47 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
Saturday's match not only marked the Mustangs highest point total of the year and biggest margin of victory, but it also marked the team's final away game of regular season play. The win on York's turf, combined Windsor's loss against Queen's on Saturday, puts Western back in sole possession of first place in the OUA West Division with a 13-4 record.
Â
On the other end of the spectrum, the Lions maintain the bottom spot of the OUA East. The loss to Western is the team's ninth in a row, giving them a 2-14 season record.
Â
It was a full-team effort on Saturday night as every Mustang who stepped on the court scored at least one basket in the win, with five scoring 10 or more. Additionally, the win can be credited to the purple and white accuracy. The Mustangs made 63 field goal attempts, one less than the Lions 64, however, Western connected on 54% of their shots, compared to a 26.6% success rate for York
Â
The five Mustangs to achieve double digits points were
Mackenzie Puklicz with 15,
Alex Van Heeswyk with 14,
Maddy Horst with 12,
Meredith McLeod with 11, and
Caroline Wolynski with 10. Van Heeswyk, whose 14 points marks her season-high, led all players in rebounds, grabbing nine off the glass.
Â
First-year point guard Sandra Nagowska led the home side in scoring with 11 points in the loss. Shauney Fischer followed the freshman's lead, earning eight points for the Lions.
Â
Two of Fisher's eight points were the first of the match, off a jump shot 35 seconds in. The teams took the first two minutes fighting for the lead, but when a basket by
Julia Curran made the score 8-6 for the Mustangs, the purple and white never looked back, and the quarter ended 22-11 for Western.
Â
The remainder of the game carried out similarly to the first ten minutes. The Lions had difficulty sinking the ball, and the Mustangs responded by grabbing rebounds and capitalizing on their chances. Despite the Lions' efforts, the Mustangs earned nearly double their opponents' points each frame, outscoring York 19-10, 31-15, and 21-11 for the next three quarters to earn a 93-47 win.
Â
The Mustangs have just three more regular season games left, all of which are at home. First up is a highly anticipated rematch with the Windsor Lancers on Saturday, February 20 at 1 p.m. Catch the game at Alumni Hall and live on OUA.tv
