WINDSOR, Ont. –
Katelyn Gosling recorded a goal and two assists, while
Kelly Campbell turned aside 21 shots to help Western defeat the Windsor Lancers 6-3 on Saturday night at the South Windsor Arena.
The win has the Mustangs in sole possession of third place in the OUA standings and one point behind the second place Nipissing Lakers.
Maybe more impressive than the six goals the Mustangs scored in the victory was the fact that they all came from different skaters with Gosling,
Brittany Clapham,
Stacey Scott,
Kendra Broad,
Brianna Iazzolino, and
Marlowe Pecora all hitting the back of the net. Against Windsor, the Mustangs exhibited the scoring depth that can make them so hard to defend.
Western opened the scoring just under 14 minutes into the game. Clapham took a pass from linemate Scott and scored her eighth of the year to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers did not let the lead last for long however, as forward Krystin Lawrence scored just three minutes later to even the game at 1-1.
The score would remain tied for the balance of the first period, with the Lancers holding a slight 11-8 lead in shots on goal.
Windsor carried their momentum into the next period as they took the lead 2:40 seconds in the frame. Lawrence scored her second of the game, assisted by the OUA's second leading point-getter in Erinn Noseworthy. Lawrence's two goals were her twelfth and thirteenth of the year, and keep her on top of the OUA scoring race with 31 points so far this season.
The Mustangs reply was an offensive explosion unrivaled by anything the team has seen this season, scoring five unanswered goals, with the first three all coming in just four minutes and 39 seconds.
Scott got the outburst started, converting assists from Clapham and Broad to tie the game with a power play marker. Gosling then scored fourth of the season off of a pass from
Tia Kipfer, before Broad netted another power play goal to put Western up 4-2.
The Mustangs continued their offensive explosion with two goals to open the third period. Iazzolino scored 7:10 in the final frame, and her goal was followed up by a short-handed marker from Pecora. Gosling recorded her third point of the night assisting on Pecora's tally after she provided the primary on Broad's second period power play goal.
The Lancers added a late goal but the Mustangs finished things out with a 6-3 win.
Western now heads into their final contest of the regular season, an away game against the Waterloo Warriors next Thursday at Columbia Ice Field in Waterloo.
