ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Western Mustangs continued their winning ways on Sunday, defeating Brock in five sets (25-15, 19-25, 25-14, 17-25, 15-5) to extend the purple and white's winning streak to 11 games.
The win improves the Mustangs record to 15-2 and maintains their spot atop the OUA West Division standings. Heading into the final week of the regular season, Western holds a two-point edge on McMaster with two games remaining on the schedule for both teams.
Kelsey Veltman led the way for Western on Sunday, posting a career-high 28 points in the win. The Brampton, Ont. native registered 19 kills, five solo blocks, four assisted blocks, and two aces.
Aja Gyimah was next up on the scoresheet, with 15.5 points off of 12 kills, two solo blocks, and two assisted blocks. A trio of players led Western's efforts in the backcourt, with
Kat Tsiofas,
Emma Somerville, and
Katie McKenna recording 11, 10, and 10 digs respectively.
Alana Norris and Tori Carroll led the Badgers attack, with 11 and 10 points, while Karlinna O'Leary contributed 14 digs, with another 11 coming from Abby Jenkins.
Momentum shifted throughout the match, with one constant being that each team won their respective sets by no less than six points.
Western started off strong, taking a 25-15 victory in set one before falling 19-25 in the ensuing frame. Western rebounded with a 25-14 win in the third, however the Badgers responded with a big fourth set, handing the Mustangs a 17-25 loss.
Continuning the theme of the match, Western fired back with a 15-5 win in the fifth and final set to take a 3-2 win.
The Mustangs now get set for their final two games of the regular season, both on the road in Toronto. First up will be the undefeated Toronto Varsity Blues, in a battle of the OUA's two division leaders on Friday, February 19 at 8 p.m. Western will then conclude their regular season campaign with a 6 p.m. contest against Ryerson on Saturday, live on OUA.tv
