Greg Dodds and the Western Mustangs bounced back from a Game Two loss on Saturday to put up one of their best performances of the season on Sunday night, eliminating the Guelph Gryphons with a 5-1 victory at Thompson Arena to book a spot in the Queen's Cup.
The OUA Final, Western's first since 2012, will see the Mustangs host UQTR on Saturday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Dodds was stellar all series for the Mustangs, starting each of the three games while compiling a .955 save percentage. He allowed just four goals on 89 shots to frustrate the Gryphons, who were backed by some solid performances by their own goaltender, Andrew D'Agostini.
Along with a berth in their first OUA Finals since 2012, the Mustangs also earned a ticket to the CIS Championship in Halifax. After leading the team through a season filled with injuries and adversity, head coach Clarke Singer pointed to the effort needed by his team to etch out a spot in the finals.
"When you look back at the season—I think this is the seventh or eight Queen's Cup I've had the opportunity to be in—we have probably the most character shown by a group of ours throughout the year, given what we went through," said Singer. "Great group effort but the key thing is enjoy this for a few hours… you've got a trophy to play for on Saturday."
Andrew Goldberg has the most points of any player taking part in the finals, putting up 10 points through eight playoff games so far.
Cody Brown and
Spenser Cobbold are also in the top ten in scoring, as they've both put up either points so far. Trent Ouelette is just outside the top 10 with seven points, but he's looked electric so far in the post-season.
Western will take to the ice against UQTR in the battle for the Queen's Cup on Saturday. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena, as the Mustangs try and take home the banner against a team that dominated them at home earlier in the season.
"I actually got a chance to watch a bit of their Carleton series over the last couple of days and they're going to be a little different team than Guelph," said Singer about the Patriotes. "They play a little bit more of a finesse game and they really schooled us in here when we played them in the first half so it's going to be a real tough game."
UQTR has dominated the OUA this season, posting a conference-best record of 24-3-1. The Patriotes demonstrated their talent and cohesiveness against the Mustangs in November, defeating the Mustangs with a three-goal second period on their way to a 5-2 win.
They boast two of the top scorers in the OUA in Guillaume Asselin, who registered a league-leading 27 goals and 47 points through 28 regular season games, and Tommy Giroux, who finished with 21 assists and 41 points. In net, Sebastien Auger started all but one game during the regular season, posting a .927 save percentage while picking up an OUA-leading 23 wins.
During the playoffs, the Patriotes have been unstoppable, as they've yet to lose through six games so far. Auger has started all six games, allowing more than two goals just once. His .949 save percentage in the post-season is tops in the OUA, as is his 1.56 goals against average.
"Don't know much about those guys," added Corrente. "So we're going to prepare, watch some video on them and give ourselves the best chance to win this hockey game."
