Preview: Western hosts Lakehead in first round playoff matchup

The Mustangs are back in action after ending their regular season last weekend with back-to-back victories against the Lakehead Thunderwolves and Algoma Thunderbirds. They'll begin their playoff run on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall with a rematch against the Thunderwolves.

The Mustangs finished their season with an 11-9 record, placing them second in the OUA West after the Windsor Lancers. Last year saw Western's elimination in the preliminary round against the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Veteran Greg Morrow finished his final season with 24.0 points per game, with teammates and fellow seniors Peter Scholtes and Anthony Spiridis following close behind with 13.7 and 13.5 points per game, respectively. Spiridis and Morrow contributed 29 and 25 points against Lakehead in their regular season matchup, proving to be the duo the Thunderwolves will try to defeat.

Morrow led the purple and white defence this season with 5.2 rebounds per game, creating a dynamic defensive duo with guard Tom Filgiano picks up an average of 4.6 rebounds under the purple and white net.

After finding their last two games as losses to Western and Windsor, the Lakehead Thunderwolves ended their season with a 10-9 record to keep them in third place of OUA Central. Last year the Thunderwolves fall in the semi-finals, whereas 2013-14 saw a first round elimination at the hand of Western.

Bacarius Dinkins leads the Thunderwolves to average 17.2 points per game with teammate Henry Tan following with 15.6 points per game. Their recent matchup against the Mustangs saw Dinkins score 17 points, Tan struggled to find a route through Western's defence and recorded only two points.

Dinkins also leads their defence with 5.7 rebounds per game and Alexandre Robichaud follows with 4.5 rebounds of his own. Robichaud contributed five rebounds – through both offense and defence – in the contest against the Mustangs, also finding a shut out from his regular play by their opponents.

Despite finding themselves heavily defended against the Mustangs, the Thunderwolves are seeking revenge for their recent loss in an all-or-nothing contest Wednesday night.
