Preview: Western faces off with Nipissing in OUA Semi-Finals

The Western Mustangs booked their spot in the OUA Semi-Finals after they completed a sweep of the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday with a 4-0 win. They move on to face the Nipissing Lakers in the McCaw Cup Semi-Finals.

The story of the series was Mustang goaltender Kelly Campbell, who stopped all 60 shots she faced in the two game series against Waterloo. Campbell has a history of heating up in the playoffs and in her career has posted a .954 save percentage and 1.42 goals against average in the post-season.  The fifth-year senior has only allowed one goal in her last six OUA and CIS playoff games.

Forward Evra Levesque leads the team in scoring in the playoffs recording two goals and an assist against the Warriors. Levesque and linemate Amanda Pereira have developed some second half chemistry and have assisted on all of each other's goals in the playoffs so far. The purple and white demonstrated their offensive depth in round one, as four different Mustangs have accounted for the five goals scored in the two games so far.

Through two games the Mustangs are averaging 21 shots a game, well below their season mark of 29. The Mustangs offence hasn't suffered however; as they scored their four game two goals on only 23 shots against Waterloo.

The Mustangs will be in tough against the Lakers, as they dropped both regular season contests to the hard working team from North Bay in the regular season.

After going 14-1-8-1 on the regular season, the Lakers wrapped up a first round sweep of the Queen's Gaels on February 26th with a 3-2 win in Kingston.

The Lakers were led in regular season scoring by Kaley Tienhaara, who scored six goals and had 14 points in 24 games played.  Forward Carly Marchment scored two goals in the series clincher, after scoring only five in the regular season.

Goaltender Jacqueline Rochefort started 18 games for the Lakers this season, posting a 1.67 goals against average and .940 save percentage. Rocherfort faced 60 shots in the two game series against Queens and surrendered only three goals.

While their penalty kill is only operated at a 86.1 percentage during the regular season, the Lakers scored an OUA leading five shorthanded goals. Being defensively aware while on the power play will be something that the Mustangs will have to do against Nipissing.

A well-coached, defence first team, Nipissing will present a great obstacle for the Mustangs to reach their second straight McCaw Cup.
