Mustangs head on the road to take on the Lancers

The Mustangs are back in action this weekend following a strong showing at the annual York Excalibur Tournament that saw them top Queen's, York, and Japan's Budo University. On Sunday, Western will be looking to add Windsor to the list of teams that have fallen to the Mustangs in 2017.

Fans can expect the Windsor Lancers to come out swinging as they try to recover their season and bounce back from a 0-5 start. They've only been able to win five sets in total this year, with Guelph, Waterloo, Queen's, RMC, and Ryerson all walking off the court victorious.

Offensively, Windsor relies heavily on Brad Gyemi. The second-year right side has totalled 88.5 points, which is more than twice that of the team's second-highest scoring athlete. Gyemi averages 4.7 points per set to sit fifth overall in the OUA.

Western, however, has shown greater versatility in their attacking. Gavin Taylor and Bryn Ramsay are equally favoured by setter Matt Hooker, with Taylor averaging 3.3 points per set, and Ramsay recording three.

Chris Newcombe has also been playing an increasingly important role in the purple and white offence. Standing at 6-8, the middle blocker is the most efficient attacker on the team with a .508 hitting percentage in addition to being one of the top solo blockers in Ontario, and within the top ten for total blocks.

Western has found success in previous matches through strong and consistent serving efforts, but that likely won't be enough to keep Windsor at an arm's length. The Lancers have a better reception record than some of the earlier purple and white opponents, and can't be counted on to give up as many free points.

Discipline appears to be the greatest weakness of the Lancers, as they've racked up both blocking and ball handling errors. It's worth noting that blocking errors have also plagued the Mustangs this season, with 12 on the books this season.
