Western takes straight sets win over Brock

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Mustangs secured their fifth win of the season on Sunday afternoon, sweeping the Brock Badgers in three sets (25-13, 25-22, 25-22) at the Bob Davis Gym.

With the win Western holds a 5-4 record, good for third in the OUA West. Brock, a team that returned to the OUA this season after a 15-year absence, has secured two wins across eight games and occupy fifth place in the standings.

Western was led by Bryn Ramsay and Chris Newcombe, as the pair recorded 13.5 and 12 points respectively. The Badgers relied on Matt Forbes to generate points for the team, scoring eight points, while Timmy Spisar followed with seven.

The Mustangs effectively dominated the first set, making the most of the Badgers offensive and defensive struggles, with the home side unable to defend against a powerful Mustang attack. Western generated a .450 hitting percentage in the opening frame, while the Badgers recorded a -.083 mark, with the purple and white taking a 25-13 set win.

The landslide first set that saw the Mustangs come off the court with a 12-point victory seemed to serve as a wakeup call for the Badgers. The following two sets saw Brock tighten up their offensive game and begin to challenge Western.

Sets two and three saw the Badgers closely trail the Mustangs at the end of the set, with both ending 25-22 in favour of the Mustangs.

The Badgers will have another opportunity to try and topple the Mustangs next week, when they make the trek to Alumni Hall for a Saturday afternoon matchup. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m., with live streaming available on OUA.tv.
