The Mustangs are back in action this weekend, hosting the Brock badgers less than a full week after sweeping them in three sets. Saturday's game will be played in Alumni Hall, giving the purple and white the home court advantage this time around.
Â
Western will head into the weekend ranked third in the OUA West with a 5-4 record after falling to Guelph, Queen's, and McMaster earlier this season. The Badgers sit fifth in the West with two wins and six losses on the books. Their wins came over Trent, and the then U SPORTS No. 10 Guelph Gryphons. Â
Â
En route to striking down the Gryphons, Brock relied heavily on Timmy Spisar and John Elgersma at the net, while Spisar also led the team in the backcourt. The freshman notched 16 kills, three service aces, and three blocks for 21 points in the contest but has not yet been able to repeat the high-calibre performance. Â
Â
Last week's contest between Brock and Western saw the Brampton native put in only seven points, while Matt Forbes recorded eight.
Â
The matchup saw both
Bryn Ramsay and
Chris Newcombe dominate offensively, as the pair combined for 25.5 points.
Â
The effort allowed Ramsay to continue to lead the Mustangs in points, averaging 3.3 per set over nine games to total 105. He's proven to be just as effective in the backcourt, leading the team in digs.
Â
Newcombe's 82-point total puts him third among the Mustangs, while also being the team's most efficient athlete at the net. The 6-8 middle has recorded a team-leading .443 hitting percentage in addition to being the best solo blocker.
Â
Badger setter Marcelo Correa can be expected to be the biggest obstacle to Ramsay,
Gavin Taylor, or Newcombe's efforts to record high hitting percentages. The freshman leads the team in digs, averaging 1.84 per set. His numbers put him tied for 11th overall in the OUA, outpacing every Mustang on the roster.
Â
Elgersma also offers may also prove to be a thorn in the side of the Mustangs, as the strongest blocker on Brock's roster. Â Â Â Â

The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., and fans can catch all the action
