Top-ranked Ravens defeat Mustangs at Alumni Hall

LONDON, Ont. - A 21-point performance by Eddie Eyikor propelled the Ravens to a 82-60 victory against the Mustangs on Saturday night at Alumni Hall.

"We were able to set up our pressure a little bit. It could have been a bit better, but that's an outstanding team." said head coach Brad Campbell. "I thought we did a relative decent job in our ball screen defence. We changed a little bit of our coverage from normal. We're still learning on the fly."

The loss updates the Mustangs record to 3-11, keeping them in a tie for fourth place with the Waterloo Warriors in OUA West, while Carleton remains undefeated at 14-0 and on top of the OUA North standings.

Omar Shiddo led the Mustangs in scoring with 11 points, with teammate Ian Smart contributing 10 points. Smart and Alex Otyzv led Western's rebounding efforts with five apiece.

Ekiyor's 21 points represented a game-high, while teammate Connor Wood next up on the Ravens' scoresheet with 12 points. Ekiyor also led the Ravens on the board, grabbing 11 rebounds as did Joe Rocca.

The Ravens took advantage of Western mistakes in the early going, grabbing six steals in the first frame on their way to a 26-14 lead after the opening quarter.

The Mustangs fought hard to keep the score within a few points but the Ravens were able to pull away midway through the frame on a 7-0 run to extend their lead, with Carleton taking a 40-22 advantage into the half.

The Ravens dominated the third frame starting on a 12-0 run that kept the Mustangs off the board for the first half of the quarter. Ekiyor paced the Ravens offence in the quarter, scoring 11 of the team's 22 points, and helping Carleton extend their lead to 62-34 heading into the final frame.

Although the Mustangs found more shooting success in the final frame, the Ravens' early lead was too large to decrease in a few short minutes with Carleton taking an 82-60 win.

The Mustangs are back in action next with a pair of games against the Algoma Thunderbirds starting on Friday, February 3 at the George Leach Centre. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. and can be watched live on OUA.tv.
