TORONTO – A late goal from
Braeden Gee helped the Western Mustangs earn a 1-1 draw with the U SPORTS No. 9 York Lions on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mustangs now hold a 6-2-3 record and occupy fourth in the OUA West standings, four points behind Guelph, McMaster and York who are all tied for first place.
Although neither team was able to score in the first half, the Lions held the edge in shots, outshooting Western 8-3 and forcing Mustangs goalkeeper
Kody Thomson to make three saves in the first 45 minutes.
Things were a bit more even in the second half, with York holding an 8-5 edge in shots. The Lions were first on the board on Sunday, with Dylan Carreiro converting a ball from Steve Kloutsouniotis to put York up 1-0 at the 74 minute mark.
Western responded with a goal from Gee in the 87th minute to earn the 1-1 draw. Gee's marker was his third of the weekend after tallying both of Western's goals against Windsor on Saturday, and the striker now ranks first among all Mustangs players with five goals this season.
Next up for the Mustangs is a pair of games against the 1-9-0 Algoma Thunderbirds in Saut Ste. Marie. The first of the back-to-back matchups is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, with the second contest set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 8.
