Quick start leads Mustangs over Lions

TORONTO – A pair of goals from Julia Crnjac and Giulia Geraci powered the Mustangs to a 2-0 win over the York Lions on Sunday afternoon to extend Western's winning streak to nine games.

The win moves Western to 10-1-0 on the year and they remain in first place in the OUA West standings. York falls to 1-6-4 following the loss and they are listed in eight place in the West standings.

The action got started quickly, with Geraci finding the back of the net just four minutes into the contest. The goal is the fourth of the season for the first-year midfielder and moves her into a tie with Sabrina De Nard for the team lead in goals.

Western didn't wait long to extend their lead, as Crnjac scored her second goal of the weekend in the ninth minute. The striker has now scored in each of the Mustangs past three games, and is just behind Geraci and De Nard for the team scoring lead.

Those would be the only two goals of the contest, with both the Lions and Mustangs registering three shots each during the second half. Megan Girardi earned the clean sheet for Western with four saves in the contest.

The Mustangs next matchup will be on Saturday, October 7, at 1p.m. against the Algoma Thunderbirds. Western will head to Sault Ste. Marie for a double header that will see the Mustangs and Thunderbirds square off again on Sunday.
