SUDBURY, Ont. – A two-goal performance from
Evra Levesque helped the Western Mustangs go undefeated on their season opening weekend with a 5-1 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday afternoon at the Countryside Arena.
Levesque's two goals both came in the third period to help the purple and white put the game out of reach. Three other Mustangs marked their names on the scoresheet with
Amanda Pereira, Rachael Armstrong, and
April Clark all scoring in the win.
First-year goaltender
Carmen Lasis had another strong performance, stopping 18 of the 19 shots she faced to earn her second consecutive win to start her OUA career. Karen Collins was busy in the Voyageurs net, making 28 saves in the loss.
Pereira put Western on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the game with a power play goal set up by teammates Emma Pearson and Megan Taylor to record the only goal of the opening frame.
The Mustangs got on the board quickly in the second with Armstrong scoring her first of the year off a pass from fellow forward
Alyssa Chiarello to make it 2-0 a little more than three minutes into the period.
Laurentian responded with their first goal seven minutes later as Mariah Beckett scored an unassisted power play marker to cut the Mustangs lead to 2-1 entering the final period.
Western struck quickly once again in the third, with Levesque scoring a little a little more than a minute in to make it 3-1 before adding another goal at the 13-minute mark to give the Mustangs a four-goal advantage.
The final scoring effort of the night came from Clark who finished things off with an empty net goal to earn a 5-1 win for Western.
The Mustangs next game will take place at Thompson Arena on Friday, October 27, at 7 p.m., when Western hosts Brock in their home opener.
