ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – A 22-point performance from Cassidy Ryan led the Brock Badgers to an 83-58 win over the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night at the Bob Davis Gym.
Omar Shiddo and
Damiann Prehay led the Mustangs offence in the regular season opener, with both registering 11 points in the loss.
Marko Kovac and
Eriq Jenkins were next up on the scoresheet with nine points each, while
Julian Walker led the team with six rebounds in his OUA regular season debut.
Ryan's 22 points led all players on Wednesday night, and he was one of three Badgers in double digits including a 14-point night from Dani Elgadi, and 11 points from Kascius Small-Martin.
Both offences got off to a bit of a slow start in the opening quarter, with the first basket coming just over two minutes into the game. The Badgers built up an early lead, going on a 12-0 run, before Western began to close the gap and cut the Brock lead to 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Three-pointers were the story in the second frame as the two teams combined to score 21 of the 40 points in the quarter from beyond the arc. Western pulled to within six points early in the second thanks to a three from Jenkins, and the two teams traded baskets from there until the Badgers went on a 15-0 run midway through the quarter to extend their lead to 43-27 at halftime.
The third quarter would prove to be the mostly tightly played frame of the night with the two teams exchanging points as the Badgers outscored Western 18-17. Although the Mustangs would continue to battle in the fourth, including five points from Prehay in the quarter, the Badgers would walk away with an 83-58 win.
Next up for the Mustangs is a showdown with the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, October 28. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Waterloo, and fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv
