ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Third-year guard
Maddy Horst made her return to regular season action, leading the Mustangs women's basketball team with 13 points in the team's 62-53 loss to the Brock Badgers on Wednesday evening at the Bob Davis Gym.
Horst, who had been sidelined all of last season due to injury, showed no signs of deficiency as she played a game-high 39 minutes while racking up five steals and four assists in the contest to go along with her team-leading 13 points.
Horst was complimented by veteran teammate
Victoria Heine who helped lock down the paint for the purple and white with a near double-double performance, posting nine points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
The offence was hard to come by early in the game for the Mustangs, turning the ball over and unable to connect on jump shots, but a pair of three pointers from Horst would give the Mustangs a slim 14-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Mustangs continued to build their lead early in the second frame with contributions from their rookie guards
Skye Barbato and
Debora Kamba, but turnovers continued to haunt the purple and white, eventually allowing Brock to take the 29-26 lead heading into halftime.
The defence for both teams would be intensified to start the third quarter, as neither team would find the bottom of the net until three and a half minutes into the second half. Western would regain the lead late in the third quarter and hold it for much of the fourth, but a late run led by Brock's rebounding advantage would ultimately give the Badgers the 62-53 victory.
The Mustangs will be back in action this Saturday, October 28 when they will travel to Waterloo to take on the Warriors for Waterloo's first game of the new season. Fans can tune in to all the action live on OUA.tv when the game tips off at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
