LONDON, Ont. – Goals from four different players and a 29-save performance from Stephanie Pascal led the Queen's Gaels to a 4-0 win over the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena.
"It was an interesting shift from yesterday," said Mustangs head coach Kelly Paton. "We had a lot of success on our power plays; yesterday we were three for five. And then, again, five opportunities today, and either their goalie did a really good job getting in front of the pucks today, or we just had a lack of intent around finding the holes. You can't take any credit away from her. She did a good job keeping their team in the game and made some big saves when she needed to.
"So, a bit frustrating on our end, knowing that we generated, especially second and third period, I wouldn't say first period was our best effort, but you know we'll move on, we got a short week of practice."
Queen's defends their first place ranking in OUA standings with the victory, extending their winning streak to six games and improving to 6-2-0-1. The Mustangs now sit at 4-2-1-1 with the loss, tied for second place with the Brock Badgers.
In a game that was closer than indicated on the scoreboard, the Gaels offence was provided by Hailey Wilson, Katrina Manoukarakis, Addi Halladay, and Emily Gervais.
It was a fast-paced opening frame with the visiting Gaels outshooting Western 19-3 in the first 20 minutes.
Despire trailing in shots, the Mustangs were up for the challenge, as goaltender
Carmen Lasis made 18 saves, including one without a stick. Queen's managed to get on the board with four minutes left in the period when Hailey Wilson scored off a rebound.
Queen's added two goals to extend their lead in the second period. Manoukarakis pushed the puck past Lasis eight minutes into the frame before Halladay scored Queen's third goal of the game with a little over two minutes left.
While the Gaels held the edge in shots in the first period, it was a different story for the remaining 40 minutes with Western clocking 26 shots on net and limiting Queen's to 12.
The final period saw no goals until the Mustangs pulled Lasis during a power play, allowing Gervais to score an empty-netter to finish the game with a 4-0 win.
Western will attempt to bounce back quickly from the loss, as the Mustangs have a short turnaround before facing Guelph on Thursday night.
"Guelph's a good team and, we know they have a goalie that handles the puck well," said Paton. "We're putting a large emphasis on managing the puck, keeping it away from their goalie. Establishing a fore-check early and trying to get a high-pressure system established so that we can create some chaos, create some turnovers, and then hopefully get some pucks to the net."
The Mustangs will wrap up their three game homestand on Thursday night against the Gryphons. Fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv
