Strong second quarter sends Ravens past Mustangs

OTTAWA – A strong second quarter helped the Carleton Ravens establish a lead that proved too large for the Mustangs to overcome on Saturday night, with the Ravens coming away with an 82-61 win at the Ravens' Nest.

The loss now moves Western to 3-4 on the year, and they remain in second place in the OUA West. Carleton continues their perfect season and remain first in the OUA East, updating their record to 7-0.

Henry Tan led the scoring for the purple and white, recording 14 points on the night. Marko Kovac followed closely behind with 13 points of his own, as well as leading the Mustangs rebounding efforts with six boards.

Eddie Ekiyor did it all for the Ravens, with a game high 20 points and 17 rebounds. He was followed by teammates Cam Smythe and Munis Tutu, who recorded 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

The Ravens began to establish their presence from the three-point line right from the gate, hitting a couple early in the game. A quick five-point run by Kovac helped the Mustangs keep the game tight, with the Ravens holding a narrow lead of 17-15 after 10 minutes.

Carleton began to increase that lead in the second quarter as the Ravens picked up their act on the offensive end, changing their game to begin attacking the glass. Carleton outscored the Mustangs 22-10 in the frame to take a 39-25 lead into halftime.

The third quarter began with a fast pace, the Ravens coming out with a quick 5-0 run. Western then responded with 5-0 run of their own early in the frame. The majority of the quarter was a closely-knit scoring affair, with the Ravens and Mustangs exchanging baskets with Carleton outscoring the purple and white 22-20 to make it 60-45 after the third.

The Mustangs opened the quarter with a final push, pulling to within 11 points at the midpoint of the quarter, but Carleton fell into a consistent shooting rhythm, and closed things out with an 82-61 win.

The Mustangs will be back in action on 8 p.m. on November 24, where they will be facing off against the York Lions on the road. Fans can tune into all the action live on OUA.tv.
