Western heads on the road to take on Guelph and Windsor

11/21/2017 10:06:00 AM

After splitting their weekend games against two tough competitors, the Mustangs will hit the road to take on the Windsor Lancers and the Guelph Gryphons this Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Mustangs will look to build off their momentum from their last game, a 3-1 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks, as they start to close out the first half of their season.
The Mustangs are currently 5-1-2-2 through the first ten games of their season, putting them in third in the OUA, behind Queen's and Brock, who are responsible of two of the Mustangs mere four losses of the season.

The purple and white showed resilience this past weekend, almost completing a comeback from behind win against the Guelph Gryphons. Trailing 3-0 heading in the third period, the Mustangs managed to score three goals in the last 20 minutes to send the game to overtime, before the Gryphons thwarted the Mustangs comeback.
The Mustangs rebounded the next day, earning a hard fought win against the Golden Hawks off a pair of goals from April Clark.
The Mustangs have one of the best offenses in the league, with Clark leading the way. Clark is the leading goal-scorer in the entire OUA with 9 goals, which is three goals over the next highest player, and almost at a goal a game pace. She is also in second in points, with 11, and is tied for first in power play goals with three. Amanda Pereira leads the team in assists, with 6, totaling 9 points, while Evra Levesque rounds out the offense with four goals and an assist of her own.

Western at Windsor – Friday, November 24th at 7:30 p.m.
Windsor will head into this Fridays matchup with a 0-1-7-1 record, and will be looking for their first regulation win of the season. The Lancers are sitting in 12th in the OUA, and are hoping to break into the playoff bubble before the winter break. Despite the low standing, the Lancers have had to face off against some of the best teams in the province to start their season, and managed to take both Queen's and Brock, the one and two seed, to the shootout, before eventually falling to both.
The Lancers have a dependable defensive core centered on their goalie, Molly Jenkins, who has posted a .912 save percentage, and has faced the third most shots in the league over 8 games. Windsor will be looking to Larissa Borowiec and Danielle Butler to keep up their offensive play as the teams two leading scorers.

The last time these two teams faced off against each other was nearly a year ago, when the Lancers served the Mustangs a dominating 8-1 loss in the last game before the winter break. Both teams will have something to prove in this game: the Mustangs will be look to avenge their loss, and prove themselves against a weaker team, while the Lancers will be looking for a repeat of last year to prove that their tough start was a fluke.

Western at Guelph – Saturday, November 25th at 7:30 p.m.
The two time defending OUA champions will be heading into Saturdays game with a 5-1-4-0 record, and sit tied for fourth in the league, two points back of the Mustangs. The Gyphons are coming off of a tight 1-0 loss against Brock, getting shutout for the first time this season and interrupting a five game win streak. The team will be looking to continue on with their success, and rebound with a win over the Mustangs to close out their first half of the season.
The Guelph offense is right up there with the Mustangs, and features some of the most prolific goal scorers in the league. Kelly Gribbons leads the way for her team, leading the squad in goals with 6, and the league in points with 12. Special teams are a key part of the Gryphons game plan, with their power play packing an offensive punch thanks to Kaitlin Lowy, who currently leads the league with three power play goals this season.
The Mustangs will be looking to earn a big win over Guelph in their final matchup against the season against them, and redeem their heartbreaking overtime loss to the Gryphons a week prior.
