Pair of power play goals lift Western over Laurier

LONDON, Ont. – A pair of power play goals in the third period lifted the Western Mustangs to a 3-2 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night at Thompson Arena.

"This is a good weekend for us power play and penalty kill wise," said Mustangs forward Cody Brown. "Our special teams were really good, it showed both last night and tonight for sure, we faced two good teams and scoring two power play goals tonight in the third period being down 2-1 really helped us get the victory."

Western's two power play markers came just seconds apart in the third period, with Rob Polesello scoring at 9:48 before Brown hit the back of the net a little more than a minute later. Scott Teskey provided Western's other goal of the night, scoring his first of the year early in the second period.

Brandon Robinson scored both of Laurier's goals in the game, opening the scoring halfway through the first period with a slapshot straight to the back of the net to record the only goal of the frame.

The Golden Hawks extended that lead early in the second, with Robinson powering to the net for his second goal of the night only two minutes into period. Teskey was quick to respond, scoring the Mustangs first goal of the night, only two minutes after the call from Laurier.

The third period saw the Golden Hawks spending much of their time in the penalty box, which allowed for Western to take the lead with two power play goals, the first of which came from Polesello just before the 10-minute mark.

Brown scored the Mustang's winning power play goal less than two minutes after Polesello's, converting assists from Rylan Bechtel and Spenser Cobbold to secure the 3-2 win.

The Mustangs credit their success to their increased power in special teams, as well the play of new goaltender Zach Springer. After getting the win in his first game in a Mustangs uniform on Friday night in Windsor, Saturday's contest was his first time playing in front of the home crowd at Thompson Arena.

"Everything's really happened quickly over the last couple of days," said Singer of his transition, "With Clarke coming to watch me on Wednesday with my team, to getting right into things Friday and here today. It's just awesome to get back to back wins and give the boys a bit of confidence heading into next weekend."

The Mustangs will look to continue their two-game winning streak this Wednesday, November 8, against Toronto at Thompson Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on OUA.tv
