TORONTO – A third period comeback and two goals from
April Clark, including the overtime winner, sent the Western Mustangs past the Ryerson Rams with a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The win brings Western to 3-1-1-1 on the year, good for second in the OUA standings, while Ryerson moves 2-2-1-1 and occupy fifth place. This is the second time the Mustangs have seen the Rams this season; the first a week prior which saw Western come on top 3-1, having not lost to Ryerson since 2013.
The first period saw no goals for the Mustangs, but it would allow Ryerson to net two. The Rams got on the board, just two minutes into the game, with a shot in the slot from Madison Lalonde assisted by Olivia Giardetti.
A body checking penalty would send the Mustangs on the penalty kill for the second time in the game, allowing Ryerson's Brooklyn Gemmill to score off a pass from Alex Rodriguez and Ailish Forfar to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
While the second period saw no goals for either side, it was not short of excitement. Both teams had great opportunities, as both
Tareya Webster and Rachel Seeley kept the pucks out of the net. A late power play opportunity in the period for the Rams gave them a chance to increase the lead, but Webster and the Mustangs defense shutdown the power play unit to send it into the third period with the Rams up 2-0
That lead wouldn't last long in the final frame with Clark taking advantage of a Ryerson penalty to net a power play goal and get Western on the board.
After assisting on Clark's goal, Beres got her second assist of the game near the midway point of the third, as
Shana Alexander battled in front of the net to knock it past Seeley to get the goal that tied the game at two.
The end of the third saw a lot of action, but neither team could capitalize, sending the game to three-on-three overtime to settle the score.
Both teams generated chances in the extra frame, but the Mustangs ended it with Clark and
Catherine O'Connor battling with the puck in front of the net, as Clark scored her second of the game to give the Mustangs the win at 1:47 of overtime.
The Mustangs hit the ice again next Saturday when they play the UOIT Ridgebacks at Thompson Arena at 7 p.m. Fans can catch the action live on OUA.tv
