Western kicks off five-game homestand this weekend vs Badgers and Marauders

11/9/2017 6:04:00 PM

The Men's Volleyball team will look to start an early season win streak, as they take on the Brock Badgers and McMaster Marauders at home, at the start of a five game homestand.

The Mustangs have split their opening two games, dropping their season opener 3-0 on the road to the Guelph Gryphons, before defeating the Waterloo Warriors 3-1. The Mustangs are looking to get some momentum going with a win against Brock, before facing off against the Marauders, who are the five time defending OUA champions.

The veterans have been anchoring the team so far this season, and have been leading the team. Fifth year Chris Newcombe has led the Mustangs offense with an outstanding .483 hitting percentage, which puts him second in the OUA, and with a team leading 2.71 kills per set. Fourth year Matt Hooker has been averaging 2.14 digs per set and 0.29 blocks per set.

Western vs Brock – Saturday, November 11 at 6 p.m.

The Badgers sit at the bottom of the OUA, with an 0-2 record. Logan House has led the way for the Badgers offense, with 24 kills through two matches. Felipe Costa has led the team in digs, with 24, averaging 3 digs a set. The Mustangs will be looking to tune up their skills and perfect their systems in their matchup with the badgers, in preparation for their game with the Marauders.

Western vs McMaster – Sunday, November 12 at 4 p.m.

The Marauders are the juggernaut in the OUA, with eight OUA championships in ten years, with five consecutive. Dominating the OUA hasn't been enough for the Marauders, who recently defeated the two time defending NCAA Division I champions, Ohio State, 3-2 and 3-0. The Mustangs have not been able to topple the Marauders since the opening game of 2014, that saw the Mustangs come out on top 3-2.

McMaster are currently 2-1, with their only loss of the season coming at the hands of the Ryerson Rams. Brandon Koppers has been leading the Marauders offense with 42 kills, for an average 3.82 kills per set. Koppers also leads the team in digs, with 22, and an average 2 digs per set.
