Western set to take on UOIT and Queen's this weekend at Thompson Arena

The Western Mustangs begin their longest remaining home stand of the season on Saturday, November 11th, and will look to build on the momentum of their overtime victory from their previous game last weekend.

The purple and white have gone 2-2 over their last four games since opening the season with two strong victories, but they have only lost once in regulation as they consistently find a way to register points for the standings.

This home stands comes immediately before a season-long four game road stretch to close out the first half of the season.

Last weekend saw Western suffer that first regulation loss against the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Thompson arena, followed by 3-2 overtime victory over the Ryerson Rams on the road. The Mustangs were held to a single goal against Toronto, only the second time this season that that has occurred to the OUA's second-ranked offence. Goaltender Madeline Albert made 28 saves and was only bested on a short-handed goal by forward Shana Alexander. Louie Bieman, Toronto's top point-scorer so far this season, scored two minutes into the third period to put her team ahead. The Blues would hold on despite being outshot 20-13 over the last two periods.

The Mustangs then travelled to play the Rams for the second time this season. Western handed Ryerson their first loss of the season in their first matchup, coming away with a 3-1 victory. The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, outshooting Western 15-3 and converting on one of their two powerplay opportunities. The Mustangs caught up in the shots on goal category in the ensuing period, finally breaking through in the third period on goals by April Clark and Alexander. Clark then scored her second goal of the game and OUA-leading fourth goal of the season to give her team the victory. Goaltender Tareya Webster helped shut the door on the Rams after the first period to earn the win in her regular season debut.

Western vs. UOIT – Saturday, November 11 at 7:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

The Mustangs will kick off their weekend home stand with a matchup against the UOIT Ridgebacks in their first meeting of the season. UOIT, who currently holds a 4-3 record on the season, will come into Friday's matchup against the purple and white after a tightly-contested game against Nipissing to push the Ridgebacks past a .500 record. Western swept UOIT in the season series last year, winning both games, as the Mustangs will hope for similar results come this weekend.

In their losses, UOIT has particularly struggled with the power-play. The Ridgebacks have struggled to convert on the power-play when they create opportunities, only scoring one goal while having the advantage this season. On the other hand, the Mustangs have been around the middle of the pack in terms of power-play opportunities, but sit fifth in the country in power-play goals, converting on their chances. UOIT, who has averaged just 1.23 goals per game this season, will hope to improve upon their scoring against a Mustangs team which allowed only 1.66 goals per game through their first six games.

The Ridgebacks will be led by veteran forward Kassidy Nauboris, who leads the team in points so far this season, totaling one goal and three assists through seven games. Mariah Wilson will hope to boost her scoring numbers against the solid goaltending of the purple and white, as Wilson has netted two goals and leads the team so far this year.

Western vs. Queen's – Sunday, November 12 at 3:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

The Mustangs will follow up their game against the Ridgebacks with a meeting with the Queen's Gaels the following afternoon in Thompson Arena. The Gaels have proven to be dominant to begin their season, as they hold a 6-1 record and will come into the weekend riding a four-game winning streak. Western got the better of Queen's in their previous matchup, earning a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Gaels in their final regular season game last year.

As strong as the Gaels were last season, the team has looked even stronger to start this year, as Queen's boasts one of the most potent offences the OUA has to offer. The Gaels are ranked top-ten in goals, assists, shots, and power-play percentage, all of which will test a Mustangs' defence which has held opponents to just 1.64 goals per game. However, Western will need to have strong offensive execution against a Queen's team that has a penalty kill percentage of 92.6 and has allowed only 1.57 goals per game.

The Gaels will be led by forward Addi Halladay, who leads the team in points with four goals and three assists on the season. Jessica Wakefield and Katrina Manoukarakis will also be looked to carry the scoring load against the Western defence, as both have scored four goals on the season alongside Halladay to help lead such an effective offensive attack.
