Huether scores four as Mustangs end season with loss to Lakehead

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Despite a four-goal night from Ray Huether, Carson Dubchak scored at 3:38 of overtime to power the Lakehead Thunderwolves a 6-5 victory over the Western Mustangs on Saturday night at Fort William Gardens.

Carson Dubchak recorded two goals and two assists on the night, but it was far from the most impressive offensive performance; that would belong to Heuther, who scored a natural hat trick to tie the game at 4, then added another marker to put Western ahead.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, that lead would be short-lived as the Thunderwolves tied the game exactly a minute later on their way to their second consecutive win over Western.

The Mustangs wrap up their season with an 8-16-4 record, while the Thunderwolves finish at 13-13-2 heading into the playoffs.

The game began slowly for Western, as the team found itself trailing by three just 11 minutes into the contest. Cody Alcock coverted on Lakehead's first shot of the night when the puck took a fortuitous bounce off the end boards right on to Alcock's stick in front of the net for a quick first goal.

Less than 10 minutes later, Carson Dubchak recorded his first goal of the evening, followed by his brother Brennen adding one to put the Thunderwolves up by three.

Trevor Warnaar would score in the dying minutes of the period to cut the lead to two, but Jake Ringuette responded early in the following frame to make the score 4-1.

That's when Heuther began his tear. In the second period, he scored twice in 90 seconds, with the second goal coming on the power play.

In the third period, Heuther again scored twice in a row, tallying goals in both the seventh and 11th minute. His fourth was a one-timer blast from the short side off a feed from Spenser Cobbold, who recorded three assists in the contest.

Patrick Murphy quickly returned things to a tie game, scoring 60 seconds later to send things into overtime tied at 5-5.

Following an exciting end to the third, Carson Dubchak came in on a partial break in overtime to score his second of the game and secure the 6-5 win for Lakehead.
