LONDON, Ont.- A second half goal from Kaylin Twardowski proved to be the difference as the Guelph Gryphons handed the Western Mustangs a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Field.
"Overall, it was a very good performance," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "Especially the first half, we completely dominated the game. Credit to their defending and their goal keeping, we didn't get the goal and then they're always dangerous on the counter attack and that's where they got a couple opportunities in the second half."
Western controlled the play in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Gryphons 7-1 and forcing goalkeeper Libby Brenneman to make four saves to keep the Mustangs off the board.
Things were a bit more even in the second half, although the Mustangs continued to hold the edge in shots, outshooting the Gryphons 7-5. Twardowski's goal came in the 69th minute, giving Guelph a 1-0 lead that they'd maintain through the final whistle.
Although they didn't come away with the win, coach Painter was pleased with his team's performance and the Mustangs strong defensive play.Â
"I thought both teams were physical. I was happy with the way our team competed physically. Especially, for us being such a young team," said Painter. "I was really happy with our performance. Unfortunately, we didn't get the result that we wanted."Â
The Mustangs finish their opening weekend with a 1-1 record, and they'll look to improve on that next weekend when they return to the pitch on Saturday, September 2, to take on the McMaster Maruaders. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Mustangs Field.
