| By:
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Western Mustang's women's lacrosse team kicked off their season with a strong start on Sunday, defeating both the Brock Badgers and Laurier Golden Hawks.

"We had a good start to the season today - it's always nice to start with a couple of wins," said head coach Kristen Stafford. "We have some things to work on this week to clean up our game, but the girls' cohesion is already amazing - even with a big rookie class."

Western opened the day facing off against Brock on the Badgers home turf. The started off strong, opening the scoring to establish an early lead. However, the Badgers stormed back to tie things up, sending the game to halftime tied up four goals apiece. The Mustangs came out flying in the second half, scoring eight goals to take the game 12-7.

Second year attacker Katy De Snoo showed a strong presence on the attacking end, scoring four of the Mustangs twelve goals in the win. First year Shay Van Every had a strong outing in her debut as a Mustang, adding two goals of her own to the tally.

After taking down the Badgers to start the day, the Mustangs returned to the field for a hard-fought matchup against the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Western got out to a strong start once again, taking a 3-0 lead into halftime, before the Golden Hawks responded to tie things up in the second half.

With the score tied up at 5-5, a pair of late goals put the Mustangs on top with a 7-5 win. The play of Maegan McCrory stood out, as the veteran showed why she was the OUA's Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2016 as she put on a strong defensive performance against the Golden Hawks.

"Now that our first game jitters are out we're really looking forward to a couple of weekends at home on our own field in front of a home crowd," said Stafford

The Mustang's will be back in action Sunday September 17 on home turf, when they welcome both Laurier and Guelph to Mustang Field. Game time for Western's rematch with the Golden Hawks is set for 8:30 a.m., while the Mustangs and Gryphons will face off at 1:45 p.m.
