The 2017 tennis season got underway this past weekend with the Mustangs squaring off with both the Toronto Varisty Blues and York Lions on Saturday and Sunday at the University Tennis Centre.
The women's team started off the day strong by taking the doubles point. The first ranked duo of
Madeline Benn and Helen He finished their first game 8-1. The third ranked tandem of
Leanna Carpino and
Emily Sneddon kept the momentum going after coming out on top 8-4. The final doubles match at #2 was taken by the Mustangs with
Sophie Bui and
Melissa Lee winning 8-7(5).

The Mustangs continued to dominate by winning four out of six singles matches to win by a final score of 5-2. Helen He won the #1 singles,
Sophie Bui the #4 singles,
Emily Sneddon the #5 singles, andÂ
Leanna Carpino the #6.

Following the women's match, the men's team took the courts to play Toronto.

Toronto took first strike taking the #1 doubles with a score of 8-4. Western struck back as the #3 duo ofÂ
Mark Jensen and
Ian Sneddon edged Toronto out 8-6 to tie the overall doubles. The final point came down to the second court where
Andre Szilvassy and
John Drake pulled out a 8-7(5) victory to take the doubles point, and give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage going into singles play.
Toronto started off singles play by tying the score 1-1 with a win at #4 singles. Western promptly took back the advantage to go up 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory by
Mark Jensen at 6th. The remaining four matches were back and forth, all going three sets, with each team having chances in each match. Unfortunately the Mustangs were unable to capitalize, and Toronto pulled out a 5-2 victory.

Both teams returned on Sunday to take on York with the women's team starting first.

York came out strong taking the doubles point 2-1 to go up 1-0 going into singles play.

The singles matches went back forth, starting with a win from Helen He in #1 singles to tie the score 1-1. Western went up to a 2-1 advantage after Melissa Lee won the #2 singles match. The last four matches were tightly contested. While Agathe Keromnes was victorious in the #3 singles, the Mustangs were unable to win the remaining three matches, leaving York on top with a final score of 4-3.

The men's team took the courts following the Women's matches.

The men's team took control right from the start, as the tandem of the Kurtis Aleksandre and Ron Singer punched in a 8-0 win at #3 doubles. Mark Jensen and Andre Szilvassy solidified a doubles point win with a score of 8-4 at #1 doubles. The doubles sweep was completed as John Drake and Vahagn Tonakanian came up on top 8-2 at #2 doubles.

The Mustangs were able to maintain their momentum throughout the singles matches. Ron Singer started his singles campaign with a win at #5 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-1. Matthew Erdman also had a strong debut winning at #6 singles 6-2, 6-2. The Mustangs were able to win the remaining matches to complete the sweep, defeating York by a score of 7-0.
