Mustangs stay in first place with 1-0 win over Brock

LONDON, Ont. - Fifth-year striker Sabrina De Nard netted her third goal of the season and the lone goal of the match to give the Western Mustangs a 1-0 victory over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon in St. Catharines.

With the win, the Mustangs extend their winning streak to six games and now hold a 7-1-0 record to remain atop the OUA West standings, two points ahead of Guelph. The Badgers' loss will drop their record to 2-4-2 on the season as they will hope to bounce back tomorrow against the Windsor Lancers.

Western, as they have done all season, relied on their tight defence and constant ball movement to dominate the possessions and create ample chances for themselves throughout the match. The Mustangs' offence was held relatively in check in the first half, only getting four shots off in the opening frame, but holding Brock to just two opportunities in their own right as the first half concluded at a 0-0 deadlock.

The chances came in bunches in the second half for the purple and white as they found themselves with seven shots in the second frame, but only De Nard's would find the back of the net 10 minutes into the half to give the Mustangs the 1-0 win.

De Nard's goal ties her with Giula Geraci as the leading scorer for the purple and white, as De Nard helped pepper the Brock defence all afternoon with four shots of her own today.

The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, September 24, as they travel to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
