Mustangs extend undefeated streak to four games

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. – It was a weekend of strong results for the Western Mustangs as they earned two wins and a tie to move the team into second place in the OUA and extend their undefeated streak to four games.

Two weeks into the season the Mustangs now hold a 3-1-1 record, five points back of the undefeated York Lions for first place in the OUA.

The Mustangs started the weekend with a showdown with the Queen's Gaels on their home turf in Kingston.

Western got out to a 2-0 lead off of goals from Payten Lang and Katie Newton, before the Gaels found the back of the net with 15 minutes remaining the second half to close the gap. The home side continued to press, but the Mustangs defensive unit stood tall to walk away with a 2-1 win.

Western returned to the field to play their second game of the day in the extreme heat as they took on the defending OUA Champion Toronto Varsity Blues.

After a back-and-forth first half, Toronto came out strong in the second with a goal to start the scoring. Soon after, Western strategically gained a short corner by Lang, setting things up for Newton's second goal of the day. The score would remain tied as Western held up their impenetrable defence with many saves from Marielle Fernback to earn a 1-1 draw.

The Mustangs wrapped up their weekend with a return match against the McGill Martlets, a team that Western defeated last weekend by a 2-1 score.

McGill took an early lead on Sunday, going up 1-0 just minutes into the contest. Western answered back with three unanswered goals, one hammered home by rookie Cameron Hahn and two from Brigid Sterling, as Sterling dominated the midfield throughout the game. Western would hold on to the 3-1 lead and take the win.

Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to the University of Toronto, where they'll face off with Waterloo on Saturday at noon, followed by a contest with Guelph on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
