Western continues push towards first with home games vs Laurier and Windsor

1/23/2018 3:42:00 PM

Women's hockey went 1-1 this past weekend, with a loss to UOIT and a win against the Queen's Gaels, putting them at a 10-2-5-2 record to tie Guelph for second in the OUA. The Mustangs will now prepare for two important games this weekend against Laurier and Windsor as they look to continue their march towards the top of the OUA standings.

Evra Levesque had a strong weekend for the Mustangs, starting on Saturday when she had some of the best scoring chances for her team, despite UOITs strong defense that shutout the Mustangs. Levesque's persistent play paid off the next day, as she was rewarded with a goal in the win against the nationally-ranked Queen's goals. Levesque's recent play has been following an upward trend so far in 2018, with a stretch of games that has seen her hit her offensive stride.

Brianna Rice and Emma Pearson rounded out the offense this weekend, with solid performances against the UOIT Ridgebacks, as well as a goal each against the Gaels.

Carmen Lasis recorded a 25 save shutout, her second of the season, in the win against the Queen's Gaels on Sunday. The shutout improves her save percentage to .934, and further solidifies her position as one of the top goalies in the league.

The Mustangs will face off against the bottom seeded Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday to kick off their weekend. Laurier currently holds a 1-1-11-3 record, and are riding a five game losing streak.

Friday's game will be a part of Western's school days program, and will see over a thousand local students fill Thompson Arena to cheer on the purple and white. The game will also serve as the Bell Let's Talk game, as a part of a larger campaign to end the stigma around mental health.

The Goldenhawks offense is lead by a trio of players. Emily Visser is the point leader on the team, with two goals and three assists for five points. Jaden Head and Emily Woodhouse round out the offense with 3 goals apiece through their 16 games with the team.

Despite their offensive woes, the Goldenhawks are strong defensively. Their league worst 13 goals for is outweighed by their goals against, which rests at fifth in the league with 35 to put them ahead of the Mustangs.

Laurier boasts one of the best goaltenders in the league in Hannah Miller, with a .951 save percentage. Combined with goalie partner Cohen Myers, the Goldenhawks have a combined .937 save percentage.

The last time these two teams met was in November, when the Mustangs came out with a solid 3-1 win on the road.

After a day's rest, the Mustangs will look to tackle the visiting Windsor Lancers for the second time this season. Windsor sits just two points above the Goldenhawks in the standings in 12th, with a 2-1-14-2 record, and are coming off of a tough loss to the Queen's Gaels.

Larissa Borowiec leads the Lancers in points, with two goals and six assists for eight points. Muna Fandel rounds out the offense with eight points of her own, and four goals, while Taylor Conte has four goals and seven points.

The team has struggled defensively this season, with the worst goals against average in the league, coming out to 3.28 goals against a game, with 62 goals against total in 19 games. This is hardly outweighed by the teams meager 26 goals for, creating one of the worst goal differentials in the league.

The last time these two teams met was in November, with the Mustangs edging out the Lancers by a score of 2-1 on the road. The Mustangs will be looking for a decisive win at home this time, as the playoffs quickly approach.
