LONDON, Ont. — Second-year defender Anna Larkin scored her first goal of the season to put the Western Mustangs onto the scoreboard and help lead the team to a 3-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Sunday afternoon on Mustangs Field.
"We came out a little slower than we wanted to today and didn't create the chances we wanted to, but we flipped the switch at halftime and we're leaving with a win and that's always the goal," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "We'll be going against a couple really competitive teams to end the season, so we have to make sure we're sharp. Today was a good game for us though against a tough opponent."
With the win, the Mustangs move to a 9-0-5 record in the season and remain in second place in the OUA West division with two games left in the regular season. The loss moves the Lancers to a 2-5-7 record as they fall to eighth place in the OUA West division.
While the purple and white dominated the field in the second half, they were slow to react in the first forty-five minutes of action. Windsor's aggressive defence posed as a strong adversary for the Mustangs, but an inability to create chances of their own left both teams heading into halftime facing a 0-0 tie. However, Western's offence wasted no time upon their return to the field, as midfielder Nikki Balachorek set up Larkin with a foul kick that led to her first goal of the season, shortly followed by a goal from second-year Sophie Weaver. With twenty minutes left in the game, striker Vanessa Guglietti brought the game to its final score of 3-0 with an additional goal.
"This is a team that gets a lot of production from a variety of people, so it helps to have that depth," said Painter. "As the season winds down, the adjusts you make have to be more and more rapid, so we're going to have a busy week."
The Mustangs will be back in action this Friday, October 19 where they will host the OUA West division-leading Guelph Gryphons in their second last game of the regular season. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 P.M EST.
