Mustangs drop season opener to Guelph

Box Score Guelph, ON – The Mustangs started their 2018-19 campaign dropping a 70-40 loss on the road in Guelph.
 
Western kept it close in the 1st quarter as it was 19-10 but the Gryphons took a commanding lead after the 2nd adding 18 more points while the Mustangs only added 8 for a 37-18 game at the half.

Laura Graham led the scoring in the first half for Western going 3 for 6 shooting with 7 total points.
 
Guelph's Burke Bechard gave the Mustangs fits all night long with 11 points in the first half.
 
Coming into the 2nd half the Mustangs weren't able to gain ground as they were doubled in scoring 20-10 in the 3rd quarter but Western was committed to finishing the game strong with their closest quarter of the game being outscored 13-12.
 
Mustangs finished the game 16 for 50 in field goals but struggled from the 3-point line going 0 for 10.
 
Julia Curran was the top scorer of the game for Western finishing with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks.
 
The Mustangs next action comes on Saturday when they travel to Laurier to take on the Golden Hawks. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm from the Laurier Athletic Complex Gym. All the action can be seen on OUA.tv
