Box Score London, Ont— Two late game goals from April Clark and Shailyn Waites lifted the Western Mustangs to a 3-2 win over the Windsor Lancers Sunday afternoon at Thompson arena.
"Tonight their goaltender played well, so it was secondary opportunities," said Mustangs head coach Candice Moxley. "We weren't working hard enough off the puck to get to those rebounds and those secondary chances which would have ended up in the back of the net. At some point in time, you have to start manufacturing goals and not rely on skill so much, so it was one of those nights and it's a good lesson for our girls and something that we can watch in video and move forward from."
Clark scored twice and is now tied for first in the OUA for goals scored with six. Waites netted the game winning goal late in the third period.
Windsor's offence was provided by Meredith Goldhawk, who marked her two points of the season.
After a slow start, the Lancers got the first point on the board 11 minutes in. Goldhawk received passes from Hayley Douglas and Olivia Lynch and slid the puck past Kaitlyn Booth while on a power play.
With five minutes left in the first frame, Edie Levesque fed the puck to Waites who broke down the ice alongside Clark. Waites sent a cross crease pass to Clark; she pulled the goalie to the side and went around her to slip it into the open net and tie up the score.
"Shai won the race, chipped it down, and made a great pass to me," said Clark. "I just kind of moved it to the other side and put it in the empty net."
In the first, Windsor's goaltender Jaydlin Spooner made 20 saves; Booth saved nine.
Nine minutes into the second period, the Mustangs had a two minute five on three. They set up multiple opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on the power play.
Western outshot the Lancers 16 to 7 in frame, but no goals were scored until the last second. With a one skater advantage, Goldhawk stole a rebound and hit the open net to break the tie, with help from Lancers Aubrey Lefler and Reagan Kaufman.
In the final frame, the Mustangs pulled Booth and put Tareya Webster in net. The Lancers stayed in the lead until there was six and half minutes left in the period. Clark received the puck from Alyssa Chiarello to tie up the score again.
"It was kind of our play because they lined up on the boards, the defencemen," said Clark. "So she just pushed it forward and I kind of just crawled through it and whacked at it and luckily it went in."
With less than three minutes to go, Olivia Kariunas fed the puck to Chiarello who shot on a two on one. Waites picked up the rebound and sent the puck straight to the back of the net, allowing Western to pull ahead for the first time in the game and finish with a 3-2 win.
"Me and Chiarello capitalized on an odd man rush and she shot far pad," said Waites. "It was just sitting there waiting for me, and I just tapped it in."
Western remains undefeated with a record of 4-0-0-0 and now sit at the top of the OUA. Windsor is 0-6-0-0 and in last place.
Coach Moxley would like to see the Mustangs special teams improve before their games next weekend.
"Bottom line, we need to be better, so we need to make sure we're not taking undisciplined penalties," she said. "We need to make sure when we have those opportunities, we're killing penalties, we're getting full ice clears, and then on the power play side of things, we're making sure that we're putting one up on the scoreboard."
