MUSTANGS ADVANCE TO OUA WEST FINALS IN UPSET VICTORY OVER LIONS

TORONTO, Ont. - Third-year goalkeeper Megan Girardi made an incredible seven saves to help lead the Western women's soccer team to a 3-2 semi-final upset over the York Lions to advance to the OUA West finals.

With the win, the Mustangs will advance to take on the McMaster Marauders in the OUA West finals.

Girardi, who led the Mustangs to 10 shutouts throughout the regular season, found herself tested often against the Lions, facing 13 shots from a potent York offence. However, Girardi was supported on the other end of the field by two goal-scorers, as Katrina Giantsopolous added two goals while Anna Larkin scored the game-winning goal for the purple and white in the victory.

Giantsopolous got Western on the scoreboard early in the first half, scoring in the third minute of the game to give the Mustangs the initial 1-0 lead. However, the Lions would quickly find their footing offensively, peppering Girardi with shots and pressuring the Mustang defence. But despite the constant presence of York, Giantsopolous proved to be unstoppable once again for the purple and white, netting her third goal of the playoffs to extend the lead to 2-0.

York's efforts were eventually rewarded just minutes later, as a pair of goals from Kiyani Johnson tied the game at 2-2 midway through the second half. York continued to outshoot Western throughout the second half, controlling the ball and testing Girardi for the full 90 minutes. However, a perfect setup from Morgan Asling to Larkin allowed the Mustangs to regain the lead just minutes after the Lions' tying goal. York continued their pressure into the final seconds of the game, but an unrelenting effort from Girardi allowed the purple and white to escape with the 3-2 victory.

The Mustangs will be back in action next weekend to face off against the Queen's Gaels in the OUA semifinals. The game is set to begin at 7:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch the action live on OUA.tv.
